What is Bean Day?
Between “be” and “being,” not far removed from “been,” that day of days simply is, is imminent—quite becoming—the stalk within the sprout. In youth she was Em, or sometimes even M—an empty space of type or the letter itself, dependent on her mood. But, oh, as she adolesced, the bean blossomed, and two new letters were appended to the first: M L E. Years later, then, twelve volumes of letters, arranged into words and sentenced to immortality:
I know Qabbalists who, once they have learned
The highest truths, have lost their faith and turned
To simply playing scrabble with their friends.
They’ve kept the means but now there are no ends.
Infinite in the folds of memory, without end though still she means. So on January 9th come join with us as we celebrate Emily Bean’s remarkable life and honor the anniversary of her tragic death!
